HONEY BEE SILK

Science project in collaboration with CSIRO, Australia
Ongoing

Tara Sutherland from CSIRO, Australia has developed a bio-synthetic material that opens a door to the future – silk from honey bees. The Material Design Lab is collaborating with CSIRO to explore the qualities of this material and are developing ongoing workshops involving the honey bee silk.

BIOFABRICATION

Research project
Ongoing

Biofabrication is the new definition given to the material manufacturing where materials are grown, harnessing biological organisms. At Material Design Lab we want to bridge the gap between science and design by developing an educational process that will help students grow materials in a design lab.

LAUNCH NORDIC

International collaboration

LAUNCH Nordic brings together industry leaders and innovators to identify and scale sustainable innovations in materials. The LAUNCH Nordic Challenge 2016 was titled Closing the Loop. It focused on questions like; how do we create closed loop systems and material streams? How do we design and manufacture for disassembly and recycling? And how do we shift to new business models that support durable products and re-use?

CRASH COURSE IN THE FUTURE OF MATERIALS & DESIGN

Summer School
Past (09-15 August 2017)

There are things that data and theory cannot teach you! This summer school was about knowing for yourself. From craft to synthetic biology, participants were guide you through hands-on experiences in order to learn about making materials and design. This short course was placed in a cross-disciplinary field between art, technology and natural science. We explored the making of things in the future, emanating new technologies and requirements for products to fit in to a circular economy.

MATERIAL DESIGN LAB AT DESIGNMUSEUM DANMARK

Past (21-22 May 2017)

We briefly moved into DesignMuseum Danmark for a weekend. KEA students demonstrated how they implement their knowledge of sustainability, materials and processes in creating new products. They showed machines they had built to recycle and produce new products made from plastic waste, how to use leftovers from your kitchen to dye textiles, and 3D print with mycelium as a new material. PRECIOUS PLASTIC

Precious plastic is an open source initiative started in 2013 by Dave Hakkens to encourage more plastic recycling around the world. As part of his internship for Production Technology at KEA, Dennis Simonsen built two of the four plastic recycling machines for Material Design Lab.

KEA HIVES

Student volunteer project
Past

The KEA campus at Guldbergsgade is also home to a small apiary located on the roof. It currently contains two productive honeybee hives. KEA Hives was initiated by some students, and they volunteer their time to tend to the bees all year round and extract the honey when it needs to be harvested.

MOVING INTO THE FUTURE

A collaboration with NIKE
Past (March-May 2016)

KEA students developed sustainable clothing, accessories and shoes inspired by the future NIKE customer based on the material driven design process. The project revolved around future scenarios and sustainable solutions. The students developed new sustainable materials and worked on recycling and upcycling existing waste materials and discarded products in order to innovate sports and leisure wear. BIOMIMICRY IN MATERIAL DESIGN

The most optimised design that surrounds us is nature. It has spent millions of year evolving incredible materials, designs and systems. There is no waste in nature! Biomimicry is about examining the technology in nature. It is about looking at and learning from nature when it comes to solving problems in our current design processes. This workshop focused primarily on biomimicry thinking in relation to material design.

KEA//IKEA SUSTAINABLE LIVING

A collaboration with IKEA

IKEA is developing a sustainability platform to engage co-workers and customers to share and find useful tips and ideas on how to live a more sustainable life at home.This project challenged all BA students from Design & Business and Product Development & Integrative Technology to develop and test the platform and come up with ideas of repair, refurbish, redesign, hacking, sharing, new materials, new business models etc.

CES EDUPACK SEMINAR

Closed seminar for KEA lecturers

KEA has invested in the material software CES EduPack which supports and enhances teaching of materials, engineering, design and sustainability. It provides a comprehensive database of materials and process information, powerful materials software tools etc. KEA students and staff can get the program from the Material Design Lab office or ask the library staff at Guldbergsgade campus.

KEA MEETS NIKE

Past (October 2013 – March 2014)

A collaboration with NIKE where KEA PBA fashion students were asked to test the Nike Making app and to apply the company’s research on performance and sustainability in their projects as well as using Zero Waste principles in their designs. You can see the results of their projects here: KEA_NIKE booklet

Material Design Lab and Material ConneXion opened its doors to the public and gave them the opportunity to explore the facilities by night and learn more about materials. They were encouraged to participate in a short workshop were they discovered how to make new materials from unusual sources.
